What is ITA?
The ITA Tech Challenge is an initiative of the Illinois Technology Association, whose mission is to drive the kind of investment, talent and innovation that makes Illinois a leading tech ecosystem. What is the #CodeLikeAWoman ITA Tech Challenge?
The ITA Tech Challenge is a programming, coding skills, and teamwork competition for current female-identifying students in the U.S. More than just a competition, it’s really about making new connections - with women from different universities and women leaders working at some of Chicago’s best technology companies. The ITA Tech Challenge is an initiative of the Illinois Technology Association, whose mission is to drive the kind of investment, talent and innovation that makes Illinois a leading tech ecosystem.
Is this a team based challenge or individual?
Both! The first phase, the Virtual Challenge, is individual which qualifies you for the second phase which is team based.
Who is eligible to participate in the Tech Challenge?
Any female-identifying students at U.S. based universities, that know how to code! You must be currently enrolled in a U.S. based higher educational institution to participate.
How long is the challenge?
The first phase, the Virtual Challenge, has a two hour time limit to complete the challenge. The second phase, the Final Challenge will be an all-day team challenge.
What language can I code in?
You are able to choose a coding language for each question asked. There will be questions ranging in degree of difficulty. All questions must be solved by coding/programming.
Can I use outside help/sources?
No, only a pen and paper can be used. You are not allowed to Google. You can, however, run test on your code for each question.
What type of browser can I use?
Chrome or Internet Explorer are the best browsers to use.
How is the challenge scored?
Accuracy first, time secondary in the event that there is a tie.
How do we take the challenge?
The Virtual Tech Challenge is given on a platform called HackerRank. You can try free sample challenges on their website to get a feel for what to expect.
How can I get my score?
An ITA staff member at the event can tell you your score after you are done completing the challenge. If you want to find out your score after the fact, you can email firstname.lastname@example.org
What are the dates?
There are two phases:
Phase 1 (Qualifying Challenge) | September 17-24, 2019: The challenge will be facilitated virtually. The virtual link will be open for a week and students have two hours to complete the qualifying challenge.
Phase 2 (Final Challenge) | October 17-18, 2019: After all qualifying challenges have been completed, the Top 40 scorers are invited to Chicago for the Final Challenge where you will be divided into teams, collaborate with some amazing mentors, and tasked to solve a social impact problem. You'll also have the opportunity to meet some amazing companies at the Welcome Reception and Women in Tech Breakfast.
What are the prizes?
If you make it to the Top 40 and move on to the Final Challenge, you have the chance to win a team prize of $10,000.
In addition, you'll also have the opportunity to meet some amazing companies at the Welcome Reception and Women in Tech Breakfast.
What happens if I don’t make it to the Top 40?
If you don’t make it to the Final Challenge, your resume and score from the qualifying challenge will still be sent to all of the Tech Challenge sponsors who are hiring. We will also be inviting the Top 100 to attend the Welcome Reception and have the opportunity to meet and network with the sponsoring companies.
Where is the Final Challenge held?
If you make it to the Top 40, the Final Challenge is held in downtown Chicago.
If I make it to the Top 40, who will cover the cost of my travel?
ITA will! We cover the cost of your hotel, provide you with a travel stipend and provide meals throughout your time in Chicago.
